Protein is one of the three major nutrients our body needs in order to survive. Protein plays a vital role in our body and is necessary for not only consuming a balanced diet but also muscle repair, recovery and growth.

A higher protein intake will actually increase the levels of satiety (appetite- reducing) hormones, while reducing level of hunger hormornes. Having protein in place of carbs you reduce the hunger hormone and boost several satiety hormones, which leads to a major reduction in hunger and this is the reason protein helps you lose weight. It automatically makes you eat fewer calories.

Protein is not a magic food; it is a mandatory nutrient in leading a healthy life. It is the various sources of protein that people get confused with. The reason why people think of it as a non food is due to it being sold in powder form in stores with stores such as Concentrate , Isolate , Slow release Casein and so on. This becomes confusing and takes the food part out of it.

About 20 to 30% of protein calories are burned while the body is digesting and metabolizing the protein. A diet high in protein can make you burn 80 to 100 calories in a day. When you are overweight, the functioning of cholecystikinin slows down and hence you feel hungry. When you are on weight loss diet, protein plays a vital role. 1gram per kg body weight is the protein requirement if you are trying to lose weight.

There is a lot of controversy over the right percentage of protein in a healthy diet. Some believe that we already consume too much. Others believe that there’s no such thing as too much. The reasons behind it are – it lowers carbs content in your diet that can be replaced by protein. Also if sufficient quantity of protein is not provided to the body, you will lose weight from muscles, which can come back easily.

When you are on a weight loss plan there are high chances of mood swings and overeating.  Hence protein will provide you from doing you the same thing and will lead to a healthy weight loss.

When you are underweight, you lose appetite and do not feel hungry. Cholesystokinin will play its role and bring it to normal. Once your appetite will reach a normal level you will start gaining weight. If you are on a weight gain diet, it is important that you gain a healthy weight and not unhealthy fat weight. So for a person who is trying to gain weight requires 1.2 gm/ kg body weight. To meet this requirement whey protein is a good option.

With a healthy lifestyle and a proper protein intake you can easily achieve the desired weight. When used with correct form of exercise and diet, protein can help you lose weight. Protein can also help you gain weight.
