Our skin plays a major role in protecting our body hence it is more important and quite talked through about how to maintain good skin care . But what exactly can we follow in a good skin care routine and How can we keep the skin nourished with changing weather conditions and temperature fluctuations happening around always ? During summers where feel experience more oily skin and breakouts in skin while in winters they tend to have more dry and flaky skin. Winter skin care is the most common and worried about concerns for everyone as during these times our skin experiences many changes due to drop in temperature and many people experience various skin conditions as well due to this change , But dont worry because we would today discuss in detail about the skin changes during winters and how can we avoid the unusual changes and follow proper skin routine during winters for healthy and nourished skin.

What is a skincare routine?

Skin care is an essential technique used to maintain the health of your skin on the face and body .Following good skin care helps maintain healthy and glowing and brighter skin in appearance . It is usually done by maintaining Nutrition , providing proper protein to the skin , sometimes through natural treatments or skin therapies as well . A proper skin care routine basically includes protecting your skin from too much sun or even too much cold , or any heat treatments and providing it with proper Nutrition , Hydration , Exfoliation to maintain the healthy glow of the skin

What are the common reasons for Skin related concerns or skin issues?

While there are many factors due to which skin related issues occur but the most common ones are age, stress, allergies ,poor hydration, weather extremes, using chemical based or harmful skin application products , specific skin types  , any major  pre existing skin condition like psoriasis , eczema etc or any bacterial trap on skin pores etc . All these reason when not looked after or treated correctly they lead to issues like rashes , inflammation , itching , pimples , acne , breakouts flaky skin etc , Skin conditions can be environmental and genetic as well although in both cases proper skin routine helps to improve and control the condition slowly and maintain proper skin health

Changes in skin during winters :

As mentioned above extreme temperature conditions like heat water or even cold snaps can affect your skin condition. While extreme humidity leads to skin dryness , psoriasis and increased sensitivity , cold weather strips away skin’s natural oil barrier. Due to drop in temperature and lack of humidity our skin finds it difficult to retain moisture which can lead to itchy , dry and cracked skin . During winters Cold air holds less moisture. When the environment around you is drier, your skin gets drier, too. And outdoor elements aren’t the only factor  the heaters we turn on when the temperature drops can dry out the indoor air too.The result is dry skin that can range from scratchy and annoying to itchy and uncomfortable.Taking proper skin care especially during winters helps your skin stay hydrated and retain its moisture as well .

Skin care Tips to keep in mind during winters

Dry skin being the most common concern during winters here are some basic tips to prevent dry skin – stay hydrated , Avoid drinking lot of caffeine or alcohol and include healthy fats in diet like olive oil , avocado , nuts and different oilseeds etc , Avoid hot showers

1. Be consistent with your skin care routine

Apply body oil or moisturizer during winters to keep dryness away from your skin , it is important to know how much dry is your skin as sometimes applying moisturizer once is not enough for some severely dry or itchy skin hence it is also important to make sure you choose a highly hydrating cream/lotion for the same to help repair the affected skin.

A typical skin care winter routine includes the following steps

1.Cleanse – Start with a Gentle cleanse . During the winter, it’s important to ensure that none of your products are drying out your skin (including your cleanser). Opt for a cleanser that is sulfate and phthalate-free, as they often strip the skin of its natural, replenishing oils. Try using a cream or milk formula if you have especially dry skin and make sure you’re using warm (not hot!) water when washing your face – hot water will irritate and dry out your skin even more

2.Serum – Use your lightest product, like a serum, first.  This will allow the skin to absorb the product and ensure that there aren’t any other products blocking its penetration. Opt for a hydrating serum to draw moisture into the deeper layers of your skin (such as a Hyaluronic Acid , Vitamin C ).

3.Moisturizer – Follow serum with a cream or moisturizer . Moisturizers have a thicker formula to create a physical barrier that locks in hydration and prevents skin from drying out. In addition, they assist the uppermost layer of the skin, helping it to retain moisture.

4.Face Oil – Winter is the ideal time to add oils to your routine, whether your skin is oily or dry. lt will help to soothe your skin, lock in hydration and enhance the skin barrier to help prevent moisture loss

5. SPF

We tend to primarily think about sunscreen when it’s hot outside , But just because its cold outside it does not mean we dont need sun protection  Sunscreen Not only does it help protect your skin from the harmful UV rays released by the sun, sunscreen also adds an extra layer of moisture which can further help prevent dry skin and sunscreen also helps keep skin glowing

For the most complete sun protection:

  • Use sunscreen. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. Apply sunscreen generously, and reapply every two hours — or more often if you’re swimming or perspiring.
  • Seek shade. Avoid the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun’s rays are strongest.
  • Wear protective clothing. Cover your skin with tightly woven long-sleeved shirts, long pants and wide-brimmed hats. Also consider laundry additives, which give clothing an additional layer of ultraviolet protection for a certain number of washings, or special sun-protective clothing — which is specifically designed to block ultraviolet rays
  1. Eat healthy diet

A healthy diet can help you look and feel your best. Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins. A diet rich in Omega  low in unhealthy fats and processed or refined carbohydrates might promote younger looking skin.
Drinking plenty of water helps keep your skin hydrated. Eating healthy fats helps restore skin moisture barrier, having foods  like olive oil , avocado , nuts like almonds , walnuts etc and  seeds like chia,  hemp seeds , sunflower seeds and flax seeds etc . Essential fatty acids  are responsible for many processes in the body, including healthy cell membranes. And healthy cell membranes are necessary for warding off harmful toxins, moving nutrients into the skin, and helping remove waste hence having a diet rich in omega 3 fatty acids will help improve skin health .

  1. Manage Stress –

Uncontrolled stress can make your skin more sensitive and trigger acne breakouts and other skin problems. To encourage healthy skin and a healthy state of mind  take steps to manage your stress. Get enough sleep, follow a healthy lifestyle routine

    4. Including Supplementation in skin care routine

A good topical skincare routine incorporates collagen-stimulating ingredients like vitamin C, retinoids, and peptides. Adding an ingestible supplement to assist with collagen production can produce more visible results
During summers your Vitamin D exposure is more due to daily sun exposure but during winters as this reduces it becomes important for your skin to get the essential nutrients like vitamins , minerals etc Taking supplementation during this time makes sure your nutrient requirements are fulfilled throughout the year .

Although it is essential to consult a healthcare professional before starting any new supplement, especially if you have underlying health conditions or are taking medications.
