Menopause marks the end of your menstrual cycles. If you have not had a period for 12 months, you can diagnose menopause. Menopause usually happens to women in their 40s and 50s. In fact, the average age for Indian women’s menopause is around 46.2.

However in some cases, menopause can happen early! If menopause happens before the age of 45, it is called early menopause. If it happens before the age of 40, it is called early menopause. Early menopause can affect approximately 8% of the population.

Premature menopause, also known as Premature Ovarian Efficiency (POI) affects only around 1% of women under 40 and 0.1% of women under 30, so it is not something that many women have to worry about. But read below to understand its signs and symptoms:

Signs and Symptoms of Premature Menopause

  • Your periods become infrequent or stop altogether in your late 30s or early 30s. You’ll need to watch out if you have not had a period for over 12 months.
  • Other typical menopause symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats, and vaginal dryness
  • You experience discomfort during sexual activity and have a reduced sex drive
  • You experience persistent low mood and anxiety, which could be due to a prevalent hormonal imbalance.
  • You face problems with memory or concentration, and forget things easily that you could have remembered earlier.

Causes of Premature Menopause

In 90% of women who experience premature menopause, the reason will always be unknown. However, here are a few reasons a person might experience menopause in her 30s and 40s:

  • Early menopause could happen if a woman’s ovaries stop making optimum levels of hormones like estrogen. This could be due to an autoimmune disease, infections such as tuberculosis or mumps (but this is very rare), or any genetic chromosome abnormalities like Turner syndrome
  • Premature menopause can sometimes run in families. If you have a family member who has experienced menopause in their 30s, then you have a small chance of getting it
  • Cancer treatments like chemotherapy can also cause ovarian failure. It is based on the age you experienced it, or the type of treatment you went through
  • Surgery to remove ovaries could also bring premature menopause in women

How to treat It in a Natural Way

Women who go through premature menopause experience an increased risk in cardiovascular problems and osteoporosis, due to their reduced hormonal levels at a younger age than expected.
